Entry rules, stay length and on-the-ground arrangements — with entry permission checked separately from clinical fitness to travel.

Confirm entry permission before booking

A transit exemption and permission for a medical visit are different questions. Check your nationality, route, purpose and intended stay with the relevant Chinese consulate or immigration authority. Do not assume an exemption covers treatment or recovery.

The National Immigration Administration publishes the current transit conditions. A permitted stay is an immigration limit, not a clinical estimate of when you can travel.

Allow for a changing return date

Ask about changeable tickets and accommodation extensions. The treating team should advise on fitness to travel; hospital discharge alone does not answer that question.

On the ground

• Interpretation. Confirm in writing whether medical interpretation is included, and for which languages. Clinical vocabulary is not the same as conversational fluency.
• Records custody. Decide who holds your imaging and notes during the stay, and ask for a copy at discharge.
• Accommodation. For procedures with restricted mobility, proximity to the hospital matters more than cost. Ask about step-free access and whether a companion can stay.
• Connectivity. Arrange a working phone number and messaging route before you travel, not after.
• The 2am question. Ask who you call out of hours, and in which language, before you need to.

Documents to carry in your hand luggage

• Passport and visa, plus a photocopy
• Imaging on physical media, with the report
• Medication list, allergies, and a supply of current medicines in original packaging
• The itemised quote and any written clinical plan
• Travel insurance policy wording, including any procedure exclusion
• Contact details for the coordinating service
